THROUGH PASSAGE
This is a house whose space is generated in passage through time. To understand it one must embark upon a journey not unlike that of narrative: First-off, narrative is ephemeral, it only exists in the moment when one actively engages. Second, there is no exterior to a narrative, it is inherently an interior experience; when one chooses to participate, one is within and never without.
In this sense this project is a container of multiple narratives, brought to it by each viewer and occupant. By forcing the viewer to literally occupy the space of the installation, he is compelled to engage in the space that unfolds within and around him. Furthermore, this is a space of intensive interiority where the familiar is deployed to create the transformative. The familiar takes the form of objects that shift from being protagonist of space to generators of passages in time. These resultant experiential passages and their perceptual relationships to one another reveal an architecture of domestic scale that transcends the limits of the familiar into the realm of the fantastic.
The video animation renders a dynamic experience of this space by following five different trajectories throughout simultaneously. These discreet passages projected onto the floor and walls of our space merge and fracture in time revealing multiple view points, overlaps, and other unexpected relations of this construction in space and time. The interactive wall drawing presents an alternative view of this space through the use of stereoscopic view boxes, transparent models and sculpted views.
